I keep trying to figure out just how conservatives remain in power when they have shown such incompetence in the way they handle the affairs of this country — i.e., Iraq, homeland security, energy policy, etc.
I think I have found the answer. Fear. Every time that the polls look bad for conservatives they play the fear card. They have learned that fear will bring out their base in higher numbers than the liberal base. This wins them elections.
Members of the current administration, including Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, have told their supporters that voting for Democrats would be a win for the terrorists. If we follow that logic, then voting for a Democrat is giving aid to the terrorists, which in turn is giving material support to terrorists, which makes liberals terrorists.
Therefore, after the election the neocons can find out where these nasty liberals (read: terrorists) are and lock us all up in Gitmo for being illegal combatants. Will this happen? Who knows. But just maybe this thought will make us liberals have enough fear to vote the conservatives out of office before we all get sent to Cuba.
As a government employee, it is imperative that you are able to treat others equally and with respect. It is fabulous we live in a country where we can believe anything we want and we all have the privilege of the First Amendment.
Being a government employee requires certain qualities. Being racist is certainly not one of them. People who hold socially unacceptable values need to find work that is not in the public sector.
It is all fine and dandy that the man in question has values that the majority of the rest of us do not have. He should not, however, hold a position of power where he can abuse that power because of his personal beliefs.
We do need to protect our First Amendment right. Part of that responsibility requires us to ensure that right for others as well. Having a state trooper who holds Caucasian people as higher than anyone else probably is not going to ensure the First Amendment right of those people of color.
The truth is that he was an executive with a large financial company. I don’t think you will find dirt under his fingernails as he wants you to believe.
Where are the commercials with the big office building, and where are his associates with their suits and ties? And where are the shots of him standing in front of his $1.2 million house in Omaha?
