A South Brunswick High School custodian has been arrested on sex offense charges involving a male student at the school, according to the Brunswick County Sheriff's Department.
Officials released little information about the incidents that led to the charges but said Collis Hewett, 74, of Cedar Grove Road in Supply, N.C., was being held Monday on $50,000 surety bail at the Brunswick County Detention Center.
He is charged with seven counts of sex offense with a student and six counts of indecent liberties with a child, officials said. Hewett was arrested Friday without incident, said Kyle Jones of the sheriff's department.
Authorities said the incidents involved one student and occurred from September 2005 to Sept. 7, 2006. Officers would not release the student's age or his grade. It also is unclear how the investigation into Hewett and the charges began, or exactly how long the investigation took.
Vann Pennell, principal of South Brunswick High School, referred all inquires about Hewett, the student and the investigation to the school district.
Superintendent Katie McGee was not available for comment Monday, but did issue a release with information about Hewett. It stated Hewett began his employment as a custodian at South Brunswick High School on April 7, 1997, and was suspended on Sept. 12. Hewett, who earned $20,112 annually, submitted his resignation from the position on Sept. 15, the day of his arrest, the release said.
