Butte County Judge Steven Howell was about to sentence Becerril on Wednesday, when his court clerk notified him a new charge had apparently been filed against the Chico man, accusing him of having had unlawful sex with a minor under age 18.

After a lengthy recess was called, Carlos, who was filling in Wednesday for an ill prosecutor assigned to the mail theft case, confirmed the felony sex charge against Becerril.

Hoptowit entered pleas of not guilty on Becerril's behalf to the sex charge and a preliminary hearing was set for the Chico suspect in two weeks.
