Kane County residents would receive an e-mail alert when sex offenders move into their neighborhoods under a plan unveiled by Republican Kane County Sheriff candidate Kevin Williams Thursday.

It would be modeled after DuPage County's new OffenderWatch. A spokesman for the DuPage County Sheriff's Office said thousands of residents have signed up for the alerts through the sheriff's Web site since the program launched in February.

Law enforcement officials should use the latest technology to maintain data on the county's increasing number of sex offenders and share this information with the public, said Williams, a lieutenant with the sheriff's office.

“The only concerns I would have is if it withstood the legal test, but if it's something that benefits the community I would not have any objection to it,” said Perez, a sergeant with the sheriff's office.

As in DuPage, Kane County residents would have to register to receive the e-mail or U.S. Postal Service postcard notification. Residents would be notified of offenders within one mile of their home, child's school or day care center, playground or other address entered into the Web site.

Available information includes the offender's name, alias, photograph, physical description, nature of conviction and location of the offender's home.
