As Coakley officially launched her campaign yesterday, flanked by Democratic politicians in a Boston hotel, Frisoli said he intends to be a real presence in the race for attorney general.

"First and foremost, I am not a career politician like Martha Coakley. She is business as usual," Frisoli, a trial lawyer from Belmont, said in a phone interview. "We need to restore the attorney general's office...to the people of Massachusetts."

Coakley laid out a long list of goals for the attorney general's office yesterday, including protecting children and the elderly, helping to grow the state's economy and providing consumers more choices among auto insurers.

Coakley, a Medford resident, has handled an array of high-profile cases since becoming Middlesex DA in 1999. In the DA's office before becoming boss, she worked under outgoing Attorney General Thomas Reilly and became well-known for prosecuting British au pair Louise Woodward.

Frisoli, who has garnered national press for battling the North American Man Boy Love Association, has held posts including assistant district attorney in Norfolk County and vice mayor of Cambridge.

Coakley dismissed Frisoli's accusations, aired in a radio ad, that her office was slow to indict a man accused of sexually assaulting his stepdaughter because of his corporate ties, and that it refused to bring criminal charges against two police officers who allegedly sexually abused a college student because of their jobs.

"He, I think, has both misportrayed the reason those cases took so long and shows an incredible lack of understanding about the difficulty of doing child abuse investigations," Coakley said. "Our theory is always we want to do them, we want to do them thoroughly and we want to get them correct. And sometimes they take longer than people may like. But I'm confident we'll get the right results in both of those cases."

Frisoli has some proposals that Coakley questioned, including having the attorney general's office monitor how local officials handle allegations of sexual abuse of children to ensure all cases that should be prosecuted are.
