Forty-one teens belong to her after-school program, which meets from 4 to 8 p.m. weekdays at the Delray Beach Boys & Girls Club. The program is sponsored by Planned Parenthood of South Palm Beach & Broward Counties.
Bullard is hoping her teens and their parents will attend Planned Parenthood's "Let's Talk" Teen Health Conference 2006 on Oct. 7 at the Delray Beach Community Center. The conference is free and open to all parents and caregivers with children between the ages of 12 and 16.
Organizers describe the program as part workshop, part health fair. It will include door prizes, raffles, community resource and referral information and breakfast and lunch.
"If we have a problem and can't go talk to our parents about it, Lynda or the other counselors can help us, " said Delvan Bates, 13. "They don't judge you before you talk, and [that] really helps. `Let's Talk' should be fun."
The aim of the conference is to give teens accurate information about sexuality and open the lines of communication with their parents or caregivers, Bullard said.
"There will always be controversy regarding what information should be presented to teens, and at what age," Bullard said. "Our parents are behind our message to the kids 100 percent. Teens encounter challenging decisions every day. We hope to provide them with enough accurate information and the self-confidence to make the safest and best decisions possible in each situation they face."
Ricky Siegel, the event organizer and director of education, training and counseling services for Planned Parenthood, said that the event would provide a comfortable venue for teens to open up about their concerns over peer pressure and self-esteem.
Siegel's workshop is on "Healthy Sexuality in Adolescence: What's Healthy; What's Not." The conference also will feature speakers from Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies, and the Responsible Father Initiative.
"What we really have learned from Ms. Lynda is that we shouldn't judge a person or situation before we talk to an adult who really has correct information," Delvan Bates said. "Sometimes the stuff we talk about is big and pretty personal -- but they also help us with other stuff, too. It's been great for us, and we feel really lucky to be involved."
