Several Miami-Dade mayors, joined by top county police officials, urged local residents on Friday to help authorities track down a suspected serial sex offender who roams the northern part of the county assaulting mostly teenage girls.

The attacker may be the North Dade Stalker, a man police believe is behind more than a dozen attempted sexual assaults and break-ins since January.

At Friday's news conference at the North Miami Police Department building, mayors from Opa-locka, El Portal, Miami Shores and North Miami urged local residents to be vigilant and cooperate with police.

He said police need the cooperation of local residents to help them catch the suspect, noting at least one attack might have been prevented if someone had reported suspicious behavior.
