Meryl Streep, anointed America's greatest actress a few decades ago, never has been revered for her comedic work. "Prime," however, proves Streep's talent knows no bounds. Her reaction shots alone are enough to recommend this funny, heartfelt and flawed romantic comedy from filmmaker Ben Younger ("Boiler Room").Streep's psychologist character, Dr. Lisa Metzger, gets plenty to react to. Her patient, a 37-year-old recent divorcee named Rafi (Uma Thurman), regales her with tales of sex with her new 23-year-old lover, David (Bryan Greenberg). The lover, it slowly dawns on the therapist, is also Dr. Metzger's son. That dawning is a thing to behold. Streep lets us see the wheels turn as the therapist puts the pieces together. Yet she keeps the moment subtle, because Dr. Metzger must maintain eye contact with her patient, who is unaware of the connection because David has a different last name. Dr. Metzger later will down glasses of water to disguise her reactions - a vaudevillian touch Streep survives with integrity intact.
