The Seminole County Public School Student Museum's annual holiday open house will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 3 at the museum, 301 W. Seventh St., Sanford. There will be folk-craft demonstrators, musical entertainment, tours of the rose garden, scavenger hunt, silent auction and children's activities. All exhibit rooms will be decorated for the season. Maria de Jesus Gonzalez, assistant professor of art and art history at the University of Central Florida, will give a free lecture at 7 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens, 633 Osceola Ave., Winter Park. Her talk, "The New Woman is the Modern Woman: Illustrations by Mary Lane McMillan," explores McMillan's representation of women and how her illustrations pointed to the 1920s ideal of fashion and glamour, emphasizing youth and sexuality. The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida, 851 N. Maitland Ave. in Maitland, is presenting the exhibitions "Voices to Vision" and "Inheritance" through Jan. 6. The Winter Park Historical Museum at 200 W. New England Ave. is presenting "Footpaths to Flightpaths" through April. The exhibit about Winter Park's forms of transportation over the years uses photographs, maps and artifacts to illustrate the fascinating use of feet, mules, wheels and motors to navigate the city. Viewing hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays and Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays and 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free. Details: 407-647-8180.
The Region 3 Chapter of the Model Warship Combat Club will have fleet battles between radio-controlled scale models of World War I and World War II warships at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 19 and 20 at the Sanford Port Authority. In this competition, each ship, directed by its captain, gives and receives damage from onboard BB cannons. If the damage received by a ship is great enough and the bilge pump cannot keep ahead of the incoming water, the ship will sink. Orlando Sanford International Airport in Sanford will play host to "FlightFest 2005" from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 12 in the airport's domestic terminal. It will feature a salute to veterans, while showcasing the airport's air carriers, rental car agencies, airport services and tenants at the Airport Commerce Park. The Central Florida Zoo will have animal exhibits and local public safety agencies will be conducting demonstrations. The event is open to the public and admission and parking are free. The Council of 101 at the Orlando Museum of Art plans the 19th annual Festival of Trees. The nine-day event will begin Nov. 12, featuring decorated trees and wreaths, holiday vignettes, a gift boutique, gingerbread houses and children's activities. Children can enjoy Toyland Town, a dreamlike village of bright lights and oversized toys with a backdrop of hand-painted murals of a North Pole village. The museum is at 2416 N. Mills Ave. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, but there also will be evening events, including the Reindeer Romp party for children at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16 and the Holiday Jazz Stroll, an after-hours party at 7 p.m. Nov. 18. General admission is $8 for adults, $6 for OMA members and $5 for children. The Reindeer Romp is $10 per person, and the Holiday Jazz Stroll is $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
