The 19-year-old actress has not received tremendous applause for her role as a hard-nosed bounty hunter in her latest movie, but one critic in the States got a little personal, which according to friends left her in tears.

John Lyttle, a critic for the New Statesman, compared Keira's tough-gal act to "a five-year-old who has just been told that the birthday-cake icing is vanilla instead of chocolate as promised".

Clearly unhappy about her ability to play a convincing action hero, he went on to dismiss her on-screen sexuality, saying of her lapdance scene: "I once threw my office chair out the window onto a bouncy castle and witnessed more erotic movement."

The harsh criticism will be a bit of a shock to the Pirates of the Caribbean star, who has enjoyed largely positive reviews throughout her career, most recently garnering acclaim for her role as Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice.
