shattering effect that combat has on civilians. In Spanish with English subtitles. (PG-13:... Quick Flix movie reviews...
(PG-13: violence, nudity, sex, drug use, language) 1 hr. 50 min. Enjoyable nonsense about Bahamas divers who discover sunken gold and a plane full of cocaine at the same time. Sharks, skin and even an interesting plot point or two. Paul Walker and Jessica Alba swim.
(R: violence, sex, nudity, language, children in jeopardy) 1 hr. 45 min. Terrifically entertaining, post-modern noir comedy about a petty thief unraveling a murder mystery on the wannabe edge of Hollywood. The directing debut of "Lethal Weapon" writer Shane Black, with Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer and talented up-and-comer Michelle Monaghan.
(PG: violence, language, children in jeopardy, racism) 2 hr. 9 min. Sequel to the well-judged "Mask of Zorro" has its sporadic charms but is obviously trying too hard to pump things up. In other words, your typical big-budget sequel.
(G) 1 hr. 20 min. Epic, operatic animal movie about penguins' annual travels to their breeding grounds. Gorgeous photography captures these strange creatures in a way that has to be seen to believed. It's just as good as "Winged Migration," a soaring achievement, even if these particular birds never actually make it off the ground.
(R: language, sexual harassment involving violence and dialogue) 2 hr. 3 min. Based on the story of the nation's first class-action sexual-harassment lawsuit, which was settled in 1998, a decade after it was first filed. The subject deserves more psychological depth and emotional truth than what the filmmakers deliver. Charlize Theron stars.
(PG: mild thematic elements) 1 hr. 43 min. Jane Austen's comic novel is transplanted to a Utah university where a group of cute-as-a-button Mormon students learn about life, love and marriage — not necessarily in that order. A largely silly script and poor acting should prejudice any fan of the original story.
(PG-13: sexual content, language) 1 hr. 46 min. May-December romance gets a couple of twists. Still pretty standard-issue, but it's honest, and it features fine performances from a radiant Uma Thurman and a comic Meryl Streep.
(PG-13: language, crude humor) 1 hr. 47 min. Crammed with real-life traumas and feel-good turnarounds, this 1970s roller boogie comedy-drama-romance is well-intentioned but wildly uneven. Undeniable energy during the skating sequences and a soundtrack jam-packed with period songs.
(PG-13: violence, sexuality) 1 hr. 58 min. Big-screen version of Joss Whedon's cult sci-fi TV series "Firefly" is like a grungier, more violent "Star Trek." A little hard to follow for the uninitiated, but good space adventure for all.
(R: sexual content, nudity, brief language) 1 hr. 45 min. Steve Martin is in full melancholy mode in this emotionally true, but not-all-that-interesting love story about two self-contained Los Angeles residents. With Claire Danes and a very funny Jason Schwartzman.
(PG-13: violence) 1 hr. 30 min. A poor Orthodox Jew's celebration of the Sukkot holiday is upended when a buddy from his criminal past shows up. Engaging humanistic comedy is the first made by religious and secular Israelis working together. In Hebrew with English subtitles.
(G: violence, scary stuff) 1 hr. 25 min. In their first feature following a series of award-winning shorts, the Claymation inventor and his smarter dog try to save their English village from a garden-threatening bunny monster. Lots of horror-movie gags enhance the usual whimsy.
(R: sexual content, strong language) 1 hr. 47 min. Nicolas Cage plays a self-loathing weather forecaster who learns to accept the narrowing of life's possibilities. Brave, uneven, best for those who hate themselves or moviegoers looking for an Alexander Payne-style near miss.
